May 2006 Newsletter
"The high note isn't the only thing."
- Placido Domingo
Oops! I accidentaly erased this newsletter while updating for June - I've tried to reconstruct it here faithfuly.
But sometimes it's the best thing! I was recently asked to help split-lead in the SDSU A-Band. So, I've once again been experiecing the glory and pain of high notes. We took a fun little jaunt down to Ensenada, Mexico for a music festival - another one coming up this weekend for the Coronado Jazz Festival. Editorial note on the Coronado Festival: Jeff Beck's legacy is alive! The trumpet section from Valey Center High School knocked our socks off with their abundance of high chops. Jeff teaches at Valley Center Middle School and is obviously inspiring those kids with his "Maynard-like" ways. Also, kudos goes to Christopher Holiday, who runs the jazz program at VCHS - the whole band kicked butt big time - definately the highlight of the festival. In more Big Band news, The Brad Steinwehe Big Band will be finishing up their first CD and releasing it by years end. Check out later newsletters for updates.
Some big events coming up for Seaside Brass groups. The openning of the ne Shamu Show happens on May 27th at SeaWorld - look for Seaside Brass and Lost at Sea at that event. I'll be debuting a new fanfare for that event. Next month, the Irate Pirates appear at Legoland for the opening of "Pirate Shores," a fun new zone at the park.
Until next time . . .
Ciao!
